Do I need matching dual monitor models?

The simple answer is no.

There are circumstances in which it does not matter at all whether they are matching. I use to have my iTunes, MSN and other distractions running on an older 15" CRT monitor that sat on another desk next to me - so it was not sitting side by side with my other monitor. This meant it did not look too tacky having a 15" CRT and a 19" LCD sitting side by side, and it was still extremely useful in giving me more desktop real estate to play with.

If you have your 2+ monitors sitting side by side, it always looks better if they are matching. The downside if they are different sizes, is that you will scroll off one monitor, and it will appear in a different (vertical) position on the other monitor (see exaggerated diagram below). This does not cause any problems as such, it can just be a little annoying at times.
